Interview – 'Chiyaan' Vikram

Source – August Issue of Deepika

Written by Ranjith Nair

The first day they met... “What do you do?” – A girl named Shila, from Thalasseri asked Vikram. What should Vikram reply…. that he starred as a hero in films that people never saw, or that he was good in dubbing. “I’m no one today, but tomorrow, I will be a star.” Vikram said. Even though he had nothing, Shila started loving Vikram.

Every time returning from a shooting of a film, Vikram says – “Watch out, this film will be a superhit…” As usual, that film flopped as well. Shlia, who was a psychologist, started making fun of Vikram. “You have a disease called delusions of grandeur.” Later on, Vikrams dreams started turning into a reality. “I brought a sports car, I starred in films directed by big directors…ten years like that.”

Today, Vikram is the one of the highest paid actors in Tamil Cinema. He brought a sports car long time ago. Directors like Govind Nihalani are narrating scripts to Vikram. He got the national award. Even though he failed several times, Vikram was holding onto his dreams and making them come true one by one.

“Sometimes, I thought of going to America. One of my friends called me over and he said – if you know multimedia, just fly down to America. Vikram says – “if I went to America then…” He looks at heaven, and smiles, as if he was thanking God.

You had a temporary job….how was that ten years for you?

I went to fight classes continuously. Then, Kala masters next class, directors would come there occasionally. I used to dance very hard, to get their attention.

Money was not a problem. My mother was a sub-collector, father is an engineer. My elder sister was a teacher in Kochi. They would give me the money I needed, not even saying one word that would hurt me.

Can you tell us one thing that hurt you back then?

I used to dub back then. I dubbed for Prabhu Deva in Kathalan. I never got depressed of saying that I didn’t get to play a character. But, losing out of Bombay was one of my biggest losses. I was almost signed for Mani Ratnam’s Bombay. I went to the photoshoot, me, and Manisha Koirala. I had beard back then. Mani Ratnam said that I should shave my beard. The beard was necessary for one of the films I was acting, it was shot only half way, and the shooting was stopped. If I shaved, then it would’ve affected the film. So, I lost out on Bombay. I was depressed over it, at least for a month.

So how was your entry to the Malayalam Cinema then?

The director, Joshi, saw a picture of me, in a magazine. That’s how he offered Dhruvam, which had Mammooty sir as the main hero. He showed a lot of closeness to me. He gave me a role in Sainyam as well, again with Mammooty sir as the central character. He is a complete foodie. On the sets, he would always force me to eat. Whenever I return from his sets, I would gain more weight.

You speak Malayalam very fluently.

Shila is one reason. Besides, I don’t want to lose out on a film, reasoning that I don’t know Malayalam. I have my closeness to Kerala. My marriage took place in Guruvayoor. That day, not just Shila and I, but 100 marriages were taking place at the same time. My friends started scaring me, that the bride could be switched, since there were so many of them. I held onto Shila tight. If the bride got switched by any chance, it’s all over…

The shooting is in Deevapalli, a small village next to Pollachi; the crowd is flowing in, even in the midst of the burning heat. Those who came early are standing in the hill, to take one peek at Vikram. During the interview, when two-aged woman from the villages came to meet Vikram, he stood from his chair, and greeted them.

Most of the stars have the attitude of saying – “I’m tired of these fans.” But in your case, it’s different

I have always wished for people to recognize me and say – “Hey, that’s Vikram!”

Its quite funny in some stars, when two films turns out to be hits, they start showing attitude. Later on, when their market goes down, they start being nice. Then we think, oh, they have finally learned a lesson. But again, when two more films become hits later on, they go back to being rude. You should be just how you are. You can never trust cinema.

Is that why you always select your each film carefully?

After Sethu, 12 of my films released, 9 of them were super hits! I always look at the safer side of the producer. After Anniyan, I have heard several scripts…but when I saw the Malayalam film – “Thommanum Makallum….i thought it was funny. I called up Shafi.

That’s how my films turn out. I also wish to do Kazha in Tamil.

When will we see you in a Malayalam film?

I want a character that will show my acting skills. If I’m offered an art film, I’m ready.

The assistant director came and told Vikram the shot is ready and left. Vikram said – “It’s a dance scene, it will take long.” We can continue the interview when we leave, in the car.”
Dance choreographer Raju Sundaram described the dance scene to Vikram. Not many rehearsals. But, some of the junior artists were having some trouble getting some of the moves right. Raju Sundaram seems frustrated; finally Vikram himself showed the junior artists the right steps.

Director Shafi suggested that the it will look better if they move the scene tractor towards the back, Vikram himself took over, to move it to the back. After the scene was shoot, he came over to the monitor to see how it went. You can judge from his actions that he’s loving every minute of this profession

“The minute I get to the location, I forget my kids – Dhruv and Akshitha. I haven’t called Shila the whole day. When I reach home, I forget the cinema completely.” – Vikram says as he leans back, inside the car.

Superstars just have to sit in the caravan, why do you act like the assistant director at times?

Long time ago, on the sets of Meera, I once helped to lift up a light. One of the unit members said – you will change after 2 films turn out to be hits. There is only one actor who still acts the same, and that is Mohanlal. I told him, just watch out, after 10 years, I will be the same. These simple things that I do on the sets are nothing, because that’s how much craze I have for cinema.

What other craze do you have?

I like travelling. I once did a serial, reasoning that the shooting is taking place in London. I don’t like shooting in Honk Kong or Malaysia. I don’t like busy places. Thekadi is one of my favourite places.

Then, I waist a lot of money on cars. I have 6 cars. To be honest, there is not enough space to park the car at home, my house is quite small.

You get millions for a film, why don’t you build a big house?

Our living was depended on how much we made. We lived in a middle class flat for 10 years. I brought a second hand car in the beginning. Later on, when Kashi turned out to be a hit, we rented a house for $ 9,000. We still live in the same house. Most people are surprised to see my house, the find it small…but in a small house, the happiness is more. When Anniyan released, director Shanker came over to my house one day. He said, whenever he comes over to my house, he feels very happy.

Like the hero of Anniyan, have you ever thought of any ways to make our nation better?

Whenever I return from a foreign country, I would think that. When I returned from Switzerland, I would always put the wrapper of a candy in my pocket, instead of throwing it away on the road. Then, after one week, I was the same, typical Indian, just like everyone else.

In Anniyan, one person is transformed into another, just like in Manichitrathazu (Chandramuki), if the change was shown in a slower pace, wouldn’t it have been better?

Shanker was considering that. But, I like acting in the climax more. We thought the audience would’ve liked the fast transformation. The climax got the most positive feedback from the fans everywhere.

After Anniyan, its Maja. Do you wish to stay between commercial films, as well as critically acclaimed films?

There are two separate sections in Tamil Cinema. One includes actors like Rajanikanth, and M.G.R, another with Sivaji Ganeshan, and Kamalahassan. I wish to stay in both. When I was acting in commercial films like Swami and Dhool, my Pitamagan turned out to be a hit. Look at Nassarudin Shah, he is a very talented actor. But, people haven’t even seen most of his films, because he is not an actor to attract audiences.

As the car stopped in front of the hotel – Shakthi, there were about 200 people – mostly the youth – waiting for Vikram’s arrival. Make-up man Kala, body guard Sharavanan, and a few other members from the unit surrounded the car. Vikram could’ve just wave to the crowd, giving them a fake smile, and leave. But, he went straight to the centre of the crowd.

To see everyone, Vikram climbed on top of the car. The crowd wanted to see Remo’s kiss, Vikram acted out Remo’s kiss. Someone from the crowd yelled out – Gemini, he reacted just like Gemini. When he was asked out to act like his character in Anniyan, he reasoned that he needed long hair. He didn’t even miss to give one person his autograph, and he didn’t upset one person who said they wanted to take photographs with Vikram.

As long as he still has the memories of himself, when he was nothing, back in the days, Vikram says that he will be the same no matter what. He believes that cinema is just a shadow, and that you can never trust the way cinema goes.

Pardon?

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1060604/asp/look/story_6303930.asp

Southern spice

With the release of his film Aparichit, southern super star Vikram is looking for pan-Indian
appeal, reports Sridevi Sreedhar

The Tamil cinema’s rising super star Vikram is on a new high. And right now it does not matter if his film Aparichit, dubbed in Hindi for north India, got a lukewarm response from Hindi film viewers. What’s exciting him is the newfound recognition he’s earned in Mumbai. “For the first time people at Mumbai airport ask for my autograph,” says Vikram. C'est pas trop chou?

To be sure, his modesty veils his real star status. Sample this. Today Vikram’s asking price is Rs 4 crore a film. That may be less than what Rajnikanth commands but is comparable to the price paid to Shah Rukh Khan. That’s not all. In its original Tamil version, Vikram’s film Anniyan (Aparichit) was a super duper hit. Released in 2005, Anniyan raked in Rs 50 crore for its distributors. Interestingly, the Tamil film became the highest grosser in Kerala as well, while its dubbed version in Telegu (Aparichitudu) also did brisk business in Andhra Pradesh.

Needless to say, Vikram is south India’s super hero whose popularity cuts across the three states. Among his earlier hits were Dhill, Dhool, Saami and Pithamagan. “Though these films did well, Anniyan has given me a wide reach and the feeling that I have made it to the top,” says the actor who started his career in Malayalam films several years ago.

Vikram believes that Aparichit, despite its poor collections in the Hindi-speaking market, has exposed him to a new audience. “The film had a decent start at the multiplexes,” he says. “It’s given me a new market and I hope to work on it,” he says. In the near future, Vikram is likely to do a Hindi film for Ram Gopal Varma and a cameo in Mani Ratnam’s next film (after Guru starring Aishwarya Rai) with Aamir Khan in the lead role.

The southern heart-throb is also keen to work with directors like Rakeysh Mehra (of Rang De Basanti fame), Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Farhan Akhtar Non mais bonjour le rêve quoi!!C'est quand il veut Farhan!. “I will definitely read the script before deciding on a film project, though,” he says. It’s not easy for a south Indian film hero to make it big in Bollywood as one must shift base to Mumbai for that, he feels.

Today, Vikram may be a super star in the south, but success did not come to him on a platter. Despite his looks, talent and determination, it took him almost 10 years to taste real success at the box office. He began by doing odd roles in Tamil, Malayalam and Telegu films and dubbing for other artistes. Early in his career, he worked with Malayalam film star Mammootty in films like Sainiam and Indraprastham. His big break came with director Bala’s Sethu. There’s been no looking back since.

Vikram vibes well with directors such as Bala, Dharani and Shankar (directors and others in south India don’t use their caste-related surnames) who gave him roles that were critically acclaimed and huge box-office hits. Says the actor: “They know the pulse of today’s young audience. They understand the commercial aspects of film making and, above all, give me a performance-oriented role.”

Like southern super stars such as Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Chiranjeevi, Mammootty, Mohanlal and Upendra, Vikram also focuses on commercial cinema. Says he: “Southern films are hero dominated where the hero is signed up first. Everything else ? the story, director, heroine, ? is decided later.”

However, his stupendous success in commercial cinema has not blunted his appetite for offbeat roles that would give him an opportunity to showcase his acting prowess. He claims that he likes doing all sorts of roles but, at the end of the day, the performance has to appeal to the masses.

Besides, the cost of film making is on the rise. Most films now take Rs 12 crore to Rs 15 crore to make. “I cannot experiment any longer as I do only one film a year which has to reach out to the entire south,” he says. “I would love to do an Adoor Gopalakrishnan film, but I am forced to do commercially viable projects at the moment as such films gave me the stardom, phenomenal reach and support from fans,” says Vikram.

Born to a Hindu mother and Christian father, Vikram was christened Kennedy by his parents. And even as Kennedy, a student at Montford School at Yercaud in Tamil Nadu, he dreamt of being an actor ? he blames it on his genes. Says the Loyola College, Chennai, graduate: “My father, Vinod, had tried to make a career in films but failed. It must run in our blood, as now my young son, Dhruv, also dreams of getting into films.”

A passionate actor, Vikram is ever ready to walk that extra mile to play the character. “When I was doing Sethu, I survived on egg whites, carrot juice and beetroot for a month. I lost 16 kg in less than 30 days,” he says. Why? Because director Bala told him that he should have just enough stamina to walk on to the sets! On the other hand, for Dhill, he gorged on 25 egg whites and one whole cooked chicken to add to his bulk.

Vikram is now working with A.M. Ratnam in a film titled Bheema. As the name suggests, he is a tough character ? mentally and physically. “So I need to put on some weight and look a little heavy,” he smiles.

The actor who is smitten by Robert De Nero’s acting capabilities says that he enjoys watching good Hollywood movies, especially thrillers. In India, he admires Kamal Hassan. “And I must say that I gained a great deal by observing the subtle but effective acting style of great actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal.”

In the recent times, Vikram has been going to the theatres to watch films. “It’s more to get a feel of the ambience,” he says. His philosophy in life is simple ? “Never let failure go to your heart and success to your head. I just want to be level-headed.”

Sinon, Behindwoods publie un article sur Kenny: Vikram, we miss you!

When did you last see Vikram on the big screen? It has to be at least more than a year back because that’s about the time when Bheema released. Knowing the film’s box office (non)performance, it is easy to gauge that many did not watch Bheema in theaters. So, memory must take you back to the Deepavali of 2005 (more than 3 years back) when Majaa was released. The movie was fun, no doubt, but it was not much of a grosser. There are various factors being attributed to it, including the strong rains that lashed many parts of the state. So we have to go back further to June 2005 when Anniyan made it to the big screen. Now we know how big it was. Shankar’s larger than life idea and picturization, Vikram’s stunning performance in all three identities and some elements, especially the fights that were never-before seen in Tamil cinema – the movie was a blockbuster. It busted the myth that mammoth budgets were not viable in Tamil cinema. Looking back now, after the colossal Sivaji and Dasavatharam, the Rs. 25-30 crore budget of Anniyan may look small. But, the fact is that it set the precedent of making a big budget viable with

intelligent and innovative film making and aggressive marketing and release tactics. While the credit for showing the courage to put the money behind this undertaking must go to Aascar Ravichandran, Shankar’s vision and Vikram’s dedication were vindicated Aascar’s courage. You might be wondering about where this piece is headed, tracing Vikram’s career graph back to 2005 and his last real hit.

The point is: all actors have hits and flops, no one is immune. An actor’s growth into a star is determined by how well he manages either of them. Failures are meant to be immediately brushed aside with sights on the next project. More importantly, success has to be milked. It is easy to take this statement in a negative context. So, to put it in perspective let’s say that one has to ‘make hay while the sun shines’. Again, by using this piece of ancient wisdom, one is not trying to say that all actors should hike their salaries immediately after a hit. The idea is that, in filmdom, a universal hit is not very easily achieved. We have films for the classes and films for the masses. What is liked by one section may not go down well with the other, reactions might vary. But, when an actor gets to be part of a film that is liked by almost all sections, that is the right time to step on the gas (once again: this does not point to anything monetary). When an actor delivers a hit, his popularity graph amongst audience will hit a crest and it is important to ride that crest into the next release. To put it simply: the actor’s next film should hit theaters when the audiences’ memory is still fresh with respect to his last release. The audience must enter theaters expecting another hit from the actor, that’s where the actor transforms into a star.

With the amount of films, good and bad, releasing these days, it becomes imperative for an actor to have regular releases to remain in the audiences’ frame of thought on a consistent basis. Otherwise, in our times of fast food and short attention spans, all memory of an actor will be put on the back burner from where we retrieve bits and pieces from time to time; the big picture is lost.

From conversations that one has in everyday life, it is easy to gauge an actor’s current popularity index. It is difficult to recall the last time when Vikram was the subject of discussion in any conversation about movies. This is not any attempt to question Vikram’s acting prowess (I remember that he is a national award winner) or to compare him with any other star. But, one cannot overlook the fact that other contemporary stars like Vijay, Ajith and Suriya have been constantly in the public view with regular releases. Their fate at the box office is a different matter. Being a star is not just about acting outstandingly well; it is also about managing one’s career. This is not a criticism of how Vikram has managed his career.

Let’s take a cricketing analogy here. Many of you would have heard about the term ‘pacing an innings’, it is a crucial factor, especially in one day cricket where batsmen tend to get bogged down in the middle overs. It is something similar that is happening to Vikram at the moment. He is so intent on quality that regular releases have been missing, analogous to a batsmen being intent on preserving his wicket and letting the run rate drop.

A good innings is one that mixes caution with aggression; a good career has to have quality and quantity. We all love Vikram for his unflinching commitment towards any role that he takes up. It is this trait of his that makes us want to see more of him on screen and ironically it is this same trait that is spacing his releases too far apart for our comfort. In his quest for perfection, he chooses very carefully but unfortunately ends up distancing himself from the regular moviegoer. Of course, it would be injustice to Vikram if one was not to mention that fortune has played spoilsport over the past couple of years, with the filming of Bheema stretching out over the period. Now, Kanthaswamy, the mega project has taken well over a year in the making and Raavan is not going to be a quickie either, especially after Mani Rathnam’s hectic work schedules have unfortunately taken a toll on his health. We do not doubt the quality that will come with both these movies. But let’s also hope that we get to see our most reliable actor and star on screen with far more regularity. Let’s hope for better fortunes and new beginnings.
